dagas_isa: Kanzaki Nao from Liar Game (Default)
You know, I don't even know why. It's just been lying around my computer for about a week.

Shipping, for anyone who would like an overly simplified definition, refers to the tendency of a fan to see (or want to see) a (usually) romantic/sexual relationship between two or more characters in a fandom.

One version of shipping would be the monoshipping/OTP (one true pair)shipping*. Someone who OTP ships Alice/Bob will usually only ship Alice and Bob together, though they may also tolerate Alice/Carol or Bob/Carol or Bob/Dan, or Alice/Bob/Carol though they probably gravitate only towards Alice/Bob fanworks, and only really support/squee over Alice/Bob.

Someone who is a multishipper may love Alice/Bob, but they can also love Alice/Carol, Bob/Carol, and/or Akiyama/Dan. While there may be parings that they dislike, they'll likely seek out or create fanworks featuring characters in more than one ship, or

I am, for the most part, a multishipper. There are pairings that I prefer and write more of than others, and a few I don't ship. For me, mostly, I'd say the appeal of multishipping comes from the ability to explore different relationship dynamics that can emerge between characters. 'Shipping' also doesn't necessarily mean happily-ever-after in whatever is an in-character version of domestic bliss. It just means that I can see there being some sort of romantic/sexual interaction between them that's worth exploring.

For me, almost any pairing/grouping could work, given:

  1. The initial set up fits canon dynamics
  2. The final result makes sense from the build-up
  3. The dynamics of the relationship is one that I, personally, find interesting. “Interesting” for me, is something that balances a potential for interesting conflicts with a consensual/mutually beneficial/all characters are agents type of relationship (which can still be messed up).

I have a canon in mind (Liar Game, manga version), but I don't think you need any outside context to understand the relationship dynamics. The biggest thing I will say is that, with two exceptions, there seems to be absolutely no canon sexual/romantic dynamics at all. And those two exceptions are kept to the background.**

This gets entirely too long, and you can tell who my OTP is )
