This is complicated.

I don't think they'll ever regret not becoming a couple. They love each other as platonic friends and as colleagues, but even with workplace restrictions aside, they're simply not attracted to each other in that way, and any spark between them fizzled out shortly after they first met.

And I think it's that reality that drives their(mostly Nodate, but Eriko a little too) maudlinism. They'd be each other's ideal mates (love each other, understanding about how high-intensity their careers are, objectively both fairly attractive) except that they're not in love in that way. And they'll never be, even if thirty or forty years later, they're still each other's oldest and dearest friends.

And more generally, they're both workaholics to the point where neither of them is really going to have much of a personal life until they're forced by retirement to have one (and then still they'll be at the police station everyday). So that regret perhaps covers that lack of a "normal" life too.

And I think they've accepted that situation as how things are, and even if they're not 100% positive about it, have at least chosen not to change anything.

Fascinating! I'm kind of jealous of their relationship, in the sense of having someone who knows you well enough to call you on your stupidities, accept your quirks, and help you up when you feel like crap, who you trust and spend a lot of time with. So it's interesting to hear the ways in which that's both not everything they want, but still sort of enough.
