Since [personal profile] muusu had Monday night off, we decided to do Art of the Table's Happy Monday. Basically Happy Monday's are about small plates using the ingredients left over from the previous week's supper club, and the menu therefore changes weekly. This week, as will probably be obvious, draws on East Indian flavors.

Cold cucumber soup
Chilled cucumber soup with chives

So I suppose the easiest way to describe this: It's like someone took very bright, flavorful, but not too vinegary homemade pickles, (complete with some pickled onions) and pureed it into a light and creamy soup. This is something I fully support.

Toast with artisan cheese and fennel confit
Toast with fennel confit, artisan cheese, and pistachios

This was easily my least favorite dish of the night, not because of any fault in the dish, but because I really do dislike soft cheeses that don't have a tangy undertone to them, especially if their strongest flavor is salt. The bit of toast and confit without the cheese was pretty good, and Muu seemed to enjoy the whole effect.

potato and pea cake, carrot salad, and raita

Think the flavor of a very mellow samosa, not bland but just very much the pea and potato taking the forefront with the curry and spice as sort of an end note. The raita itself was mild, tangy and creamy. This might have been declared overall best dish of the night if not for...

lamb rogan josh, pickled rhubarb, chickpeas, and couscous
Lamb rogan josh, pickled rhubarb, chickpeas, and couscous

Not quite sure how to describe this one, except to say that after eating it both Muu and I declared this the best dish of the night, to the point where both of us would have taken a full one had we known ahead of time. Oh alas the constantly changing menu! It was just this combination of moist, lightly spiced meat, tangy rhubarb, with miner's lettuce, chickpeas and couscous to sort of absorb the juices from the meat.

ginger ice cream, hazelnut brittle, apricots, and blueberries in cardamom syrup

Wonderful summer dessert. I have one...not quite complaint, but a wish there had been. With the way that the ice cream, the syrup, the blueberries, and the apricots worked together in kind of a multi-sweet summer harmony I wish that there'd been some kind of light cake to absorb syrup and the ice-cream melt. The hazelnut brittle was (good) interesting, but not enough to keep me from missing the cake.

So then we saw Inception,
I think besides the instinctive "this needs more women" and "this movie would be so much cooler if half the cast had been sex/gender swapped," it was really. Very much a movie that's enjoyable on a layering type of level as well as a "shh! just got with it level." It may also be a movie that I would see twice if I could afford it or one that I would buy on DVD.

My own personal theory is that Cobb is the person who is the target and Ariadne is the person who is trying to implant the idea that Mal really is gone and he needs to come back to reality.

Also if you would like to be fannish about it, I would totally read fic in which Ariadne is working as someone who conducts rescue missions for dreamers lost in their dreams. Or actually anything which allows her to kick ass and/or play around with awesome paradoxical architecture. Or well anything.

I am also heavily interested in reading MTF!Eames fic. Or Arthur/Ariadne fic where one or both of them is genderqueer.

We had fun.
