Wow. I adore this. I've always gotten the moral code and intelligent parts, and her determination to face things head on was the first thing that drew me to Nao. But "Nao knows who she is." is actually kind of easy to miss, and I think where the drama falls down on portraying her in favor of the easy arc (twice!) of growing self-confidence. And you're right, that is what makes her relationships with other people work, and what makes her read as adult despite her youth and trust blind-spot.
