What flut does to the mind
Sep. 19th, 2004 01:20 pmOkay, I'm lost in my fantasy. Between FFXI and the flutness going around, real life never stood a chance. Of course real life, while not sucky, is just not special and sparkly enough to hold my mind and my heart. Umm... and as proof of this, when I took a break from this entry to get brunch, I managed to eat lunch and throw up the dessert (and just the dessert) afterwards. Which just kind of sucks, even if it does mean some calories that I don't have to digest.
And because I've been going on too much about FFXI lately (though I shall have to gripe about yesterday before I get into the meat of this post) today I shall star the fantasy.
Okay, so I have Jaishann, my very creatively named *coughyeahrightcough* Mithra thief, who's been solo levelling in Tahrongi, because that's more fun that partying in Valkurm, even though the exp trickles in at a slower rate.
I want to start my Rank 2 quests soon, and I have the conquest points (over 3000), but I still can't get them. So I think maybe I need to increase my fame somehow. And so I decide to do some more quests, including sneaking through Giddeus (a city full of Yags) in order to fetch someone's overdue library book.
I've been to Giddeus before, albeit under the protection of a hired bodyguard and not actually into the caves where I need to go. So I figure if I could handle that at level 9 or so, then my level 17 should be able to handle the tougher Yags if they don't link. Also today I've managed to get through Buburimu (a place full of goblins) at least twice without drawing any sort of aggro on me. None whatsoever. So I felt kind of confident in my sneaking abilities.
Too bad everything deeper in the tunnels is aggressive, including the worms. And they link. So everytime I get close to finding the treasure room (and heck, I even got close enough to bribe the guard once), I get multiple monsters attacking me and I die. Which wouldn't be so bad if I could get the treasure first. This means that I lost about 1000 exp total today, actually more than.
What does this mean? It meant that I decided that it was worth the pain of going back to Valkurm in order to get faster exp. Even if it meant dealing with a party so stupid that we had a powerleveller and we still managed to get nearly wiped out on occasion. And at the same time, because we had a powerleveller, I couldn't go on my normal linkshell in order to gripe and moan, which is what linkshells are for. Complaining about what an idiot party members are. I'm a fegging n00b. I'm not supposed to be the one who knows the situation.
But I got my levels. And I got my subjob (monk), which means I get to start over levelling that job now. In Sarutabaruta. Which is lovely, trust me. And also, I got to put my character in lvl 1 armor, so she looks like a bondage queen or something. And then afterwards I got to go on Fenrir and play as my red mage Svava and meet up with Naela's character and such, which was much more fun.
Is it just me or is Flut going to bring in a new generation at HoP or omake chats or whatever. I mean Zack/Amata have already had a kid (in a post flut), and honestly, I think birth control with het couples is like lube in yaoi couples. It might be necessary or maybe even used, but no one actually mentions it in flut.
So yes, we have guys and girls (mostly) suddenly discovering that there are important differences (or similarities) between them and that exploring these differences (or similarities) lovingly usually draws forth pleasant sensations (as long as there's actual lube or something). To bring this around to baby talk, these guys and girls aren't using birth control for the most part. (I'm assuming that pretty much all of them don't have STDs because STDs aren't really romantic and because flut implies a monogamous relationship that they really aren't issues anyway) And so, unless there's some overly dramatic reason why a character/couple can't have babies, they're gonna be breeding. That's just about the level of realism that flut demands. Also, as talented writers as we are, we still can't resist cute dramas and some such.
And so this leaves me imagining what certain couples would be like as parents, even say Zack/Fei if they happened to find a baby on their doorstep or something (because even if they are meant to be together in some AU, you still know that both of them just need to be parents). I think of all the couples I know of so far, the only pair I can't see as being parents are Sabryn/Kiran, although Kiran could probably give a mean piggy-back ride as Bahamut.
In Mei/Fei, I can so see Mei being the disciplinarian. Even if his kids were doing something Fei wasn't comfortable with (like his daughter flirting with some guy), he'd probably be too shy to actually say something, although he'd probably watch over his kids closely. But yeah, Mei would be the one to actually discipline the kids. Fei would just be back up.
I think Zack/Amata has already been explored. But to sum it up, it's not two parents and a kid, it's a parent and two kids. Without any of the freaky incestual implications. But seriously, when Zack and Amata aren't having fun, it's like he has to parent her too and keep her out of trouble.
Hmm... Kiru/Iraki (not an HoP couple, but still one worth mentioning... barely *sticks out tongue*). You know, Kiru would either be the most worrywart parent ever, or he'd be just the opposite. Just depends on his dreams. He wouldn't be a very practical parent though. Everyday common sense matters would probably be left up to Iraki. I think good Ansem has rubbed of on him in that manner. Speaking of Ansem, he'd just be the looney old grandpa in that relationship.
And now Lana/Aros (because I'm familiar with this couple's dynamics). Make a holey cow with a machine gun because that's something I want to write... kind of, although I promised Starry their firstborn for giving Aros the pep talk needed for him to actually go through with the whole deed of making the kid in the first place. The thought of Lana being pregnant would scare Aros almost immediately. Okay, the guy has issues about having a significant other/having sex in the first place. He obviously believes he doesn't deserve those things after all he's done (which is probably not as much as he thinks he's done), and so the though of him passing something of his on to another generation would freak him out even more, not to mention all the hassles of pregnancy and childbirth that Lana would have to go through that he'd blame himself for.
Anyway... I think he could deal with having a daughter, especially if it took after Lana. Which is why I'm going to be evil, and granting Megumi's permission, give him a son. Not necessarily one that takes after him, but just a son. Because he does need to squirm. As parent though, they'd both be pretty horrible. Lana would spoil their children mercilessly and Aros would probably have trouble disciplining them too, especially if it meant standing up to Lana.
Umm... other than that, I guess there's still other couples to think about, but I really don't know them well enough to give speculation.
SPOILERS KIND OF AHEAD FOR FFIX. NO READY IF YOU NO LIKEY SPOILERS!!!!
Also, I've been writing Zidane/Garnet fluff and it occurs to me that couple is just as doomed as any FF couple, with the exception of Cloud/who the heck ever, especially now that FFX did a cop out and came up with FFX-2 where Tidus and Yuna could reunite.
Those two can be together and reunite, but I can't see them actually being able to get married and settled. Look at the most popular play in Alexandria: I Want to be Your Canary. No romantic story becomes that popular unless it was unlikely to happen. That's why women buy and read romance novels, because it's a chance for them to indulge in a fantasy that's likely to never happen. And so "Canary" seems to be just that: a fantasy. Which means that princesses likely do not marry commoners in real life, no matter how much they love them. And Garnet will have to be a somewhat responsible queen and marry someone for politcal purposes, or at least leave herself open to that possibility. Also, I can't see Zidane settled down and running a country (or helping at least) even if it was for the woman he loves. Monogamous, yes I can see, although he'd probably still flirt with other women when he was away from Garnet, but not settled.
And so, they can be together, even sexually, as a queen and her consort. And yes, I can see them having kids, see the whole spiel on birth control and some such. The kids would have an interesting homelife, but I can see them working it out. But they're not going to be able to live happily ever after, because both of them are going to have to make too many compromises. Also, remember that Stiener also lives in the palace. And that ummm.... is likely to keep Zidane from wanting to be in the palace. I know they get along better at the end of the story, but Stiener probably wouldn't like the whole Zidane/Garnet touchy-touchy stuff that goes on.
And that be it for this entry.
