Dust Jacket:
When two people disappear and the main suspect flees the scene, those at Utame Tower investigating the event know they have a problem. They don't know, however, that those involved were stranger than anyone suspected. Or that their attempts to solve the mystery will touch secrets that won't stay silent any longer. Now, their little tower has now become the point where the world will change, and struggling with power, love, and loyalty, they'll have to find their own way to the future or get swept away with the past.
Axis is the story of one small event, and the consequences that spring from it. At the center are Inori, seneschal of Utame tower, Zomi, Inori's younger sister, and Kage, a Shadow who tried to become a human. Inori and Kage have gone missing, and Zomi flees to a nearby forest. Kozan Kakkatou, steward of Utame, starts an investigation, but the real mysteries only come out after Zomi's been found. And the real problems begin when she informs him that Inori isn't dead, but is still out there somewhere.
For one thing, Zomi's venture in the forest brought out the Shadows, creatures who watch the potential futures of humans and feed off memories, and they want to stay with the humans. For another, the Noraiuin who wander the edge of civilization are the only ones who can help find Inori, and they're not easy to please. And Inori, at one time so self assured, must recover from her injuries and remember why she's still alive in the first place. Then, there's a matter of the Shadow hunter who will do anything to find her missing partner, and the foreign scholar who will cross officials of both her native country and her host country to reach the truth about the very first legend. And though no one's actually seen Kage, that doesn't mean he isn't somewhere.
Meanwhile, even if one wanted to pretend everything was normal, odd things are happening within the building itself. Plants wither away, stray animals are found dead, and more than one person has narrowly escaped a menacing presence, and it's only getting worse, and it's up to Inori to find her way home before things get even more out of hand. Even if it means sacrificing her best chance at happiness she's ever had. Even if it means sacrificing everything.
Everyone wants something. Everyone searches for something. Everyone has a story they must see through, and the meantime, they must wrestle with dreams and desires, love and loyalty, and discover the mysteries of a world they thought they knew so well.

About Utame:
Axis itself is a huge and multi-cultural world, but the story has a somewhat narrow geographic scope.
The story centers around a tower called Utame, which is home to about twenty-thousand people. It's located on the northeastern part of the continent of Saiden, and is associated with the noble Kakkatou family. About a half-day's walk from Utame is the Northeastern Preserve, which houses what the Shadows in my story call a 'vent', the connection between the world on the surface and Sombrelucia, the world underneath.
The major Noraiuin clan in the story originally holds a camp at the lakes just south of Utame, although they are forced to move at the beginning of the story due to safety concerns. In general, after they leave their winter camp, they are wandering further south and to the west. At their furthest point I imagine they are about one-hundred miles away from Utame.
